August 15, 1983

We have been driving continuously for the past two days. The bug is doing great. It gave me and Lorrie a scare last night when it wouldn’t start. Luckily we were in Barstow with Noreen, Leslie, AnnMarie (Noreen’s cousin) and AnnMarie’s boyfriend, Jim, We had just finished dinner at an Italian restaurant. Jim looked at the engine and told us to keep the pedal to the floor while igniting, instead of pumping it. It worked!

Last night we stayed at a Motel in Barstow that had a pool. For an hour we played keep away. I took a couple of pictures that should be good. All six of us sleep in a room 10x12. Two on the double bed and four lined up on the floor in sleeping bags.

Tonight we had reservations in a campground in the Canyon but we lost Noreen and the rest. We were supposed to meet them at the first gas station in Needles, but Needles is a pretty big town with a lot of gas stations and three exists from the freeway. So we decided to continue driving since we thought we would see them on the road. They drive fast, but the bug can so safely at 70. We were planning on getting to the Canyon tonight, but it was 10 pm on an unlit road. Plus, we couldn’t find a campsite on the map. Lorrie wanted to continue and reach the Canyon, but I kept saying how crazy it would be. Finally we decided to get a room, figure out our plans, wake up at 6 AM and make it to the campgrounds. We hope that they will be there.

It rained the entire time we were on highway five yesterday. Today it rained off and on. As we were driving to Williams tonight (where we are staying) a thunder and lightening storm was over us. Huge flashes lit up the sky!
